Apple Tree, our Garden
Round 5 of ABC Wednesday begins! With it, a new theme.
This round is all about me taking stock of our way of life. Like many others we strive towards a more sustaunable, self-sufficient life and I want to use my journal to document part of our journey.
A is for Apples.
We have 3 apple trees, 2 very mature ones and a 20 year old Discovery tree, bought for us on our 1st wedding anniversary by Jon's parents.
I often make chutney from any bruised dropped apples but this year I am going to try something different. I do have 16 demijohns to occupy remember! lol!
Apple Wine
Ingredients
- 3 1/2 lb Apples
- 2 1/2 lb Granulated Sugar
- 1 Gallon Cold Water (8 Pints)
- 2 Lemons
- 1 Orange
- 1 tsp Wine Yeast
- Yeast Nutrient
- Pectic Enzyme
Method
Wash and cut apples - do not peel or core, mince if possible.
Put into a plastic bucket[1] and pour 1 gallon of cold water over them.
Cover bucket[2] and leave for a week, but stir well every day with a plastic spoon[3].
After a week, strain liquid through muslin into another bucket.
Add 2 1/2 lb of sugar and juice and grated rinds of washed lemons and orange.
Stir well until sugar is dissolved.
Add the yeast[4], yeast nutrient and pectic enzyme[5]; then cover bucket and leave for 24 hours.
It will then be ready to strain and put into fermentation jar[6] (squeeze until dry).
Can be used as a non-alcoholic fruit drink straight away( as if) or if left for 4 months will turn into clear wine....we will be leaving ours AT LEAST 4 months!
Do you have any recipes for apples?? Do share!

You are off to a very nice start for round 5.
Mine is here.
It sounds very yummy, yummy, my grandchildren would say!

oven 175
Just in time for Halloween or Guy Fawkes night then! My Nan used to make a fabulous sponge thing with apples underneath. It was more of a pudding than a cake, quite heavy and moist (sighs). I think it was baked in the oven in a tray of water...Unfortunately I am not allowed in the kitchen without adult supervision, so no hope of me making it :D

I am participating in Round 5 Year 3 although with another Wine Blogpost
Great start to Round 5.
I like the idea of a using a theme.
I'm still trying to figure out what to do for this week/round. But something will come to me...maybe I should do "amore"?
That's a great wedding gift, the gift that keeps on giving. This post gets an A.
My recipe for apple is
cut in half
place one half in mouth between teeth and bite
when consumed
repeat with other half.
What a beautiful idea to offer a tree to a young couple as a wedding gift! I have never tried apple wine but I like very much apple pie! :-))
Cheers,
p.s. My "A" post is up at http://wonder-turquette.blogspot.com
I love cider, but it gives me a hangover within two hours. So, I better not get into applewine! Sounds really delicious though...
Linky is so annoying. Love a bit of scrumpy on a hot summers day.
That sounds like a great recipe. We have apple trees, so I'll have to give it a try.
By someway, I just have the feeling that you will post "Apple", British may be. So you two have married for 21 years. The receipt sounds delicious.
trees make the best gifts for remembrances. I think watching them grow makes them a special reminder of an important occasion or event in one's life.
& apples are the perfect food. Great A post!
No recipes come to mind at the moment! Sorry! But, looks like you'll have a nice crop this year. Everything bloomed too early here, so the cold reduced the pending crop considerably. There are so few apples on our tree that I'm afraid the birds will get them all before they are ready. Sigh...
Wonderful idea for the next round and thanks for the idea for apples!! I look forward to seeing how yours turns out.
Smiles
I've never seen an apple tree before!lucky you!
Apple pie ... Mmm! I don't make the traditional English style pie, I usually make Continental Apple Pie.
Basically it's the same, except that you add an egg and sugar to the pastry (which makes it a little 'cakey') and you slice the apples very thinly and put them in raw, layered with sugar. The original recipe calls for a layer of breadcrumbs and ground almonds on the base under the apple slices, and a few sultanas sprinkled on top under the crust, but I usually miss these out. I do sprinkle sugar on top though! Oh, and Bramleys, are the apple of choice, though you can use eating apples if you like.
An easy A for ABC Wed. but never thought of it. I posted another "A" photo. My ABC Wed. is here: http://discoverpa.blogspot.com
I've also started a new meme called "Craft It Wednesday" for anyone who would like to join me. Just post a photo of anything you craft and add your name and url to my Mcklinky. It's on my other blog here: http://lv2scpbk.blogspot.com
MacLinky worked!
Good luck with the wine!
My ABC Wed
Last year we had so many apples I made apple butter, applesauce, baked apples, apple cake, apple bread, but not a single apple pie! Will you let us know when the wine is ready for a tasting?:)
A is for apples and yours look delightful!
Thank you for ABC Wednesday. So very fun.
I love the sustainable focus you are taking this time.
Sherry
Excellent post for ABC Wednesday.
I *love* apples and all its various uses. Cider, pie, chicken, crisp, and so on.
I've never tried apple wine though, I'll have to keep an eye out for that. :)
Apple wine - that sounds delicious Denise!
It makes me wish I had an apple tree. We have a plum. Wonder what you can make with those besides my usual chutney. Your blog is lovely.
What could be better, apples made into alcohol. I made some using crab apples and it was delicious but seemed to loose some body after keeping it a while, maybe I was not drinking it fast enough. Yours will have more natural sugar so will be better. How nice to raise a toast to your trees in the dark winter days.
My wife takes apples and cores them, places them in a baking pan with a teaspoon of butter and a teaspoon of brown sugar in the hole where the core was, then bakes them. It is very simple, and they are delicious!
An Arkies Musings
I just like to cut them up and eat them dipped in caramel sauce.
I am going to see if I can navigate Mr. Linky and sign up. I have no earthly idea of how.
Apple wine? Yum! I'm still cracking up about the comment you left me - branching out a bit, LOL! :-)
Lovely shades of green! PS. Where do I find the new logo for round 5? I'd like to start next Wednesday. Thanks!
